Abstract

This thesis analyzes the figurations of women’s communities in Argentine and Spanish cinema during the period 1936–1944. Through an approach that brings together feminist theories, film analysis, and archival work, it examines case studies in which bonds between women are figured as possibility, question, or tension. Far from presenting closed models, these films explore ways of being-together in a time marked by political transitions and ideological disputes. The research draws on the concept of “affective communities” (Ahmed, [2004] 2015) to think through the choral, displacements, and the “modes of making” collective body that cinema activates through its forms. The gaze thus shifts to what films do, focusing on their affective potency and their capacity to imagine other worlds.
