Abstract

The need to implement sustainable practices in the chemical industry has given huge attention towards green chemistry for scientific innovation. Currently, the new methodologies focus on green synthesis approaches, alternative solvents, energy-efficient processes, and waste valorization strategies and these are the same ideas that carried the entire research of our research group. The primary aim of the research reported in this thesis was to investigate, synthesize, and characterize Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-based materials, with a particular focus on Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8), to establish their role as next-generation, high-performance and versatile platforms for applications that go from biomedicine to even cultural heritage. Then, in the second part of the thesis, are reported other studies done in collaboration with Prof. Barbara Ballarin, focused on the development of greener and more sustainable hydrogels for energy storage and sensor applications. The work described in the last chapter concerns the use of a naturally derived material, lignin, as adsorbent material for dye removal for wastewater treatment. Appendix A focuses on the other experiences acquired during the doctoral program, from conferences to publications and also didactic activities.
